San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) July 1, 2008 -- SomaFM, the award-winning independent internet radio broadcaster, today announced that its music broadcasts are now available on iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The streams are accessed through an iPhone-optimized website at SomaFM.com (http://somafm.com)
"We've been expanding our availability on wireless devices, and are excited to now be iPhone accessible.", said SomaFM's Rusty Hodge. "The iPhone was one of the last mobile devices that we didn't support, and we've been getting a lot of requests for it."
Streams are available in dual formats, optimized for WiFi usage or AT&T's EDGE wide area wireless network. When in range of a WiFi hotspot, listeners will get high quality, 128k MP3 streams. Streams for AT&T's EDGE - the largest high-speed wireless data network in the U.S. (available in 13,000 cities and towns) -- are optimized to ensure music plays without any glitches or delays.
Unlike most other "streaming" solutions for the iPhone, SomaFM's streams work with a standard iPhone or iPod Touch, and don't require an "unlocked" or "hacked" phone or special software installed. "The best solution for our listeners is for our streams to be available on the iPhone using the standard Apple software. This way they can continue to synch and updated their devices without worrying that the streaming won't work. Our special iPhone and touch website connects listeners to the same live, streaming music that they hear when they are at their computers."
SomaFM's iPhone streams join their other mobile device streams available on most 3GPP-capable phones from Nokia, Samsung, Sanyo and others; PalmOS Devices and Windows Mobile smart phones. SomaFM has been streaming to mobile devices since 2005.
"Our goal continues to be able to connect with our listeners whether they're at their desk, in their car or at a local coffee shop," said Hodge. "As new mobile devices become available, we will work hard to develop the technology to enable SomaFM programming to be available through them."
In addition to online and mobile devices, SomaFM programming is available on Sonos, Roku and Slimdevices internet music appliances.
